In the nearby town of Hillsboro, one family’s new home incorporates outdoor kitchen cabinets in a pool house design that pays homage to time spent at Big Cedar Lodge and travels to Keystone, Colorado.
Interior designer Kim Taylor-West struck a clever balance between nature-inspired elements—stones and wood beams, rocky hillsides softened with native plants and garden beds—and the efficiency of modern technology.

The pool house plays host to a series of distinct gathering spaces. Guests are invited to dine beneath the stars and an open-air wood beam ceiling, or to stream a favorite series in the comfort of an outdoor living room.
MOTHER NATURE MEETS MODERN TECHNOLOGY
The nearby kitchen rivals many primary kitchens in its functionality, doing so in keeping with the home’s Arts and Crafts-inspired aesthetic. Working with Mike Beck, they selected louvered door styles in Silver Birch from NatureKast, a line of outdoor kitchen cabinets renown for a revolutionary technology ensuring 100% weatherproof cabinetry.
The perimeter cabinetry houses a grill, and within the island, refrigerator drawers and an ice maker. The island’s under-mount trough sink keeps drinks on ice and within reach. Kim’s layout included space for barstools suited for more intimate, casual dinners at home.
